The Surprising Things I No Longer Spend Money On
A few years ago, I was constantly buying things that seemed essential at the moment, only to realize later that they were just taking up space, draining my wallet, and adding little to my life.
I remember the day it hit me and in that moment I decided to change and start simplifying my life.
It wasn’t about deprivation—it was about being intentional with what I truly needed.
So, I made a change. I started simplifying my life. And let me tell you, it’s been one of the most freeing things I’ve ever done. So in this blog post, I’m sharing with you 11 personal items I no longer buy—things I once thought were must-haves but turned out to be unnecessary as my lifestyle changed.
So stick around because some of these might surprise you, and who knows? You may find a few things you can cut out too!
11 Personal Items That I Do Not Buy Anymore
1. Clothes That Are Not Versatile
I used to buy clothes that looked cute in the store but were hard to match with anything else in my wardrobe. But now, I only invest in versatile pieces—neutral colors, and multi-purpose outfits that I can dress up or down. And for me it’s less clutter, less decision fatigue, and more peace of mind.
2. Large Wallets
Once upon a time, which I know many of you can relate to I carried those huge wallets with alot of compartments stuffed with old receipts, bank cards, as well as loyalty cards I never used. Now? I keep it simple with a small wallet that holds just the essentials. It’s lightweight, functional, and fits seamlessly into my bag.
3. Handbags
I used to collect handbags like they were going out of style in all colors. But now, I only buy small crossbody bags that I could wear with anything and that keep my hands free and my essentials close. No more bulky totes filled with unnecessary stuff. Just my simple crossbody bag and I am out the house!
4. Body Wash
Body wash was one of those things I seldom bought but I liked using them—but now I just enjoy using bar soap. Not only is it more cost-effective, but it also lasts longer, reduces plastic waste, and honestly, it gets the job done just as well.
5. High Heel Shoes
I was one of those women who used to think I needed a pair of heels for every occasion and in every color. Now? I only own two pairs of heels, and they’re low. Comfort is my new priority! But overall I prefer a pair of whole shoe flats any day. It’s comfortable and easy to slip in and out.
6. Eyeshadow, Mascara & A Lot of Makeup
I still wear makeup, but I’ve cut back on what I buy. Gone are the days of collecting endless bottle of mascara and palettes of eyeshadow which I use to enjoy wearing. Now, I just stick to my basics—face powder, eyeliner, lipstick, lip balm and just wearing a natural look. And this suits me is just fine.
7. Jewelry to Match Every Outfit
There was a time when I felt the need to own different jewelry for every outfit. Now, I stick to a few minimal pieces—simple stud earrings, a simple watch and delicate chains that go with everything. It is less stress and for me and it looks more simple and elegant.
8. Excessive Hair Care Products & Equipment
From hair masks to oils, sprays, curling irons, and flat irons—I used to buy it all! But now, I’ve simplified my routine. A good shampoo, conditioner, a hair oil and curl activator gel is all I need. My hair is now short so I no longer need all of those things anymore unlike when I had my longer hair. But when I did have longer hair it was things I needed.
9. Different Colored Nail Polish
I used to have a whole collection of nail polish in every shade imaginable. Now, I keep it simple with a classic French tip, clear top coat, or a natural pink. It saves me time, money, and decision-making stress.
10. Beauty Salon Services
Manicures, pedicures, eyebrow shaping, eyelash extensions—been there, done that. I do not shave my eye brows or where eye lashes so this is not something I miss. However I do my own nails, my manicure and pedicure and only on special occasions do I visit the salon. It’s a huge money saver and gives me full control over my self-care routine. And I love doing it.
11. Hair Accessories
I used to buy all sorts of hair accessories—combs, brushes, clips, bonnets, scrunchies, you name it. Now, I no longer need all of that. As I said and I no longer have long hair so I do not need these anymore. So this has simplified my and has made getting ready so much easier!
Conclusion:
Cutting out these 11 things has saved me money, time, and unnecessary stress. But more than that, it has given me a new appreciation for mindful spending and minimalism.
